Snacks To Maintain A Healthy Ferret Diet

By: Joseph Mapp

As a ferret owner I can say that the hardest thing you will do is try to say no to your ferret. They are so cute, have so much personality, and can quickly convince you that whatever they want is the thing they must have. So, if you're the type who likes to eat while you are watching TV on the sofa, be sure to have ferret food with you to share.

There are a lot of foods that are just not good for your ferret and should not be included in any type of snacks or meals that you give your pet. Most ferrets are lactose intolerant, that means that they can't eat ice cream or cheese cake even though they want to. They also shouldn't eat frosty mini wheats or any other type of cereal. If you set a "bad" treat on a counter, table, or some place you think your ferret can't reach, you will quickly discover what creative problem solvers these pets are.

When you are getting treats for your ferret, think high protein. Meat, eggs, baby food meats without carbohydrate, muscle or organ meat, egg products. Very little carbohydrate and calories. For one thing, they get fat very easily when they are not fed properly and they get malnourished very quickly when they are eating bad foods. They cannot digest things like fruits, vegetables, and grains.

You will find a lot of ferret treat on the market. Some of these treats are very good for your pet and you will want to make sure that the treats you select are low calorie, have low carbs, and are high protein. If you have been feeding your ferret people food and want to move to a more "official" ferret treat, rub a little peanut butter on the treat and they will start to enjoy the taste.

My ferret will only eat her meals out of a spoon, so she eats when I eat. She is a little spoiled, but is a wonderful pet that has been with me for several years. To keep her out of my plate and eating healthy, I had to come up with a plan for her meals and treats.

Your ferret will excel on a schedule. Once they are on a schedule they will expect to eat at those times of day so you want to be sure that you are setting up a schedule you can stick with. My ferret eats when I eat. I keep her treats on my plate so she isn't getting any "bad" food. I also break her treats up so she isn't eating a lot but she eats as long as I do.

Using the snacks to maintain a healthy ferret diet and keeping your pet on an eating schedule will help you to keep your pet healthy. When a ferret is well cared for they can live for at least ten years and you will enjoy every moment of the time that you spend together.
